Product Review Tuesday

I just purchased a Light Scoop, and I received it today! I thought I would show you a few before's and after's.

Before...

After...

Before...

After... Now, I know this last one is a little too dark, but the lighting in the hallway is atrocious, but you can see that these photos illustrate the difference between direct, (in camera) flash, and flash using a LIGHT SCOOP. AMAZING!

I am so, so happy with this product! There are a few rules when using it though. You need to be fairly close to the wall behind you so that the light can bounce off and hit your subject, and you have to adjust your camera's flash and ISO settings a certain way to get the best results. I also compensated for the awful fluorescent lighting in my house by adjusting the white balance in my camera.

I also purchased the Opteka RC-2 Wireless Remote Control. I tried it out for the first time today, though I have had it for a while. That is how I took the above pictures of myself. I mounted my camera on my tripod, and snapped the pictures with my handy new wireless remote. I am very glad I purchased it, and the set up was very easy.

HIGHLY recommend the Light Scoop, even if all you are doing is taking pictures of your children indoors. It is well worth the very inexpensive price tag.

HIGHLY recommend the Opteka Wireless Remote Control. It is awesome, especially if you are taking shots that you want to be in. If you are like me, you have a ton of pictures of your children and your husband, but not many with you in them... This will fix that!

MAKE-UP TIP MONDAY

Hello again my lovelies!

Today I'm doing something a LITTLE BIT DIFFERENT. I am going to review a few products, but I've also added PICTURES to help illustrate a few points I have made in previous posts.

Today I am reviewing a new product I purchased about a week ago, called PHOTO READY by REVLON.

I purchased the liquid foundation and the powder foundation for $11.96 each. It's a little pricey for my taste right now, seeing as we're "starving" students, but it is still a LOT cheaper than Lancome's PHOTOGENIC. (Right around $30.00 each).

Anyway, the technology of the Photo Ready line is basically this: It has light reflecting pigments in it so that it doesn't give you a white mask in photos... Do you know what I am talking about when I say a white mask?

Allow me to illustrate this by showing you a garish photo of me in October of last year, wearing STUDIO FIX powder foundation from MAC.

Now, as you can see I have done a LOT wrong with this look... It looked fine until the flash bulbs came out. You see, I was going for a more natural look, which meant powder, blush, mascara, lipgloss... but as you can see when the light hit my face, I got the white mask. You can see EXACTLY where my foundation stops if you zoom in to my neck line... but don't do that... it will probably scare you.

You can see I also did not do my eyebrows, which looked fine because I didn't doll up my eyes at all, but as you can see, I look washed out and not-so-hot.

Now, the Photo Ready foundation, instead of absorbing light and making you look like I did all those months ago, it reflects light to give you a well balanced, even look, and if you match your foundation right, you won't be able to tell where your foundation stops...

Now, on to the review...

Here I am with NO MAKEUP. (Please forgive the stylish hair-ha ha).

Here I am with my war paint. I have used a foundation brush to apply foundation in the areas I need it... Yes, I need it all over... don't judge me.

Now I have blended it in with my foundation brush. See how much more even my skin looks?

Now I have added the powder... Take in to consideration that I am using a flash in these pictures. Can you see my foundation line? hmm???

Here I am after applying blush to the APPLES of my cheeks using my fancy new flat head blush brush #4 from Sonia Kashuk. The trick is to use circular strokes, starting at the front and working your way back. I used a light pink... not as bright as I would like, but I'm out of my cosmopolitan pink... I'll have to check out blushes at Nordy's next time I go.

For those of you who might not have believed me when I said in a previous post that it is a MUST to do your eyebrows when you doll up your eyes, behold. Tell me the truth, can you see the difference?! In case this picture isn't evidence enough for you, here's another one...

Can you see it now?!

How about now? Can you tell I look much more put together? Just by filling in my eyebrows... my eyes stand out like I want them too.

Lip liner and lip gloss of course...

Over all, I would say that this product, the Photo Ready by Revlon is pretty good, and pretty bargain-priced for what it does... be careful though when you snuggle up to your sweetheart, because it does show up on clothing... just to warn you.

I hope this was semi-helpful. What do you think of the pictures? Should I continue to use photos in MTM's?

Until next time, Peace out.

He's a bully...

Today is Sunday, and in our family, that involves church... three hours of church, (which I look forward to all week). But the downside is that those three glorious hours of church are during napping hours. Ez is usually not at his best between 1 and 4... but I've never heard any complaints from his nursery leaders... until today.

Oh today!

For some reason this whole situation made me so sick and upset I was a wreck about it.

I teach the lesson in Relief Society on the second Sunday of every month, and I have to say that I seriously love it. I was just getting settled in to the third hour, ready to teach my lesson on The Holy Ghost, when the door to the room opened and I saw Ez in the arms of his Nursery teacher. I walked out to the hall, and that's when I got the news... "Ezra has been hitting people a lot. We need you to take him today." "What?! Who did he hit?" "Just about everyone." "What did he do? Just walk up and hit people?" "He threw cars at some children, and hit others in the face, and pushed some others."

So, that was it. They kicked him out today. I felt so awful! I felt like a really bad mommy. MY kid is the bully? My son is the one that people don't let their children play with? HOW DID THIS HAPPEN?!

I lost it. I was so emotional. I didn't yell at him, or tell him he was bad. No way. No how. But, I did show him how sad it made me, and talked to him about using nice hands with his friends. "We DON'T hit our friends. We DON'T throw cars or anything at our friends to hurt them. I need you to make a better choice. If you can't do that, you can't go back to Nursery anymore. People don't like to be hit, and we absolutely do NOT use our hands to hurt our friends."

He looked at my tear stained face and felt awful. "I'm sorry, Mama. I go back to Nursery." "No," I said. "You can't go back today, because you couldn't keep your hands to yourself. You can't be in Nursery if you hit your friends."

Then we walked over to the Nursery room, and I had Ezra apologize to his teacher. Then Husband came over, and I started crying so hard. I am so embarrassed that I cried so hard. I just felt awful, that I had somehow failed as a mother in some way, that made my son act out violently.

I think I scared the teacher a little bit with my crying.

I am super emotional today for some reason, and this didn't help!

But, I think Ez understands, at least I hope he does. I guess we'll see next time.

He has NEVER acted like this. I just couldn't believe that he was KICKED OUT of Nursery!

Anyway, he has quite a few Nursery teachers, and they rotate every week, so that they can attend other meetings some weeks, and one of his teachers was in RS today. She told me that Ez is her favorite and that he is not usually like that, and that he is usually very well behaved. That made me feel a lot better.

I'm sure others have had this happen to them, right? I just didn't think Ez would ever act that way! Oh my gosh. But, in all reality, he is SUCH a good boy, and EVERYBODY has bad days. I know there are days when I want to let out my annoyance in some way, and children are no exception.

In his defense, he woke up at 7:30 this morning, and didn't go to bed last night until around 10pm, (which is WAY past his bed time). He was really tired, and I know when Bryan and I are tired, we are grouches, (Husband affectionately calls me Grungetta when I am grouchy-Grungetta is Oscar the Grouch's girlfriend)... why would Ez be any different?

After a long nap, he's much happier and cooperative. Back to his old self.

I love him to pieces, what can I say?

With Love,
Suz

Back by Popular Demand

Okay, so I know I haven't posted Make-Up Tip Mondays in like, two weeks, and I just got a sweet email from a friend of mine this morning asking me if I was stopping it. The answer is no. Absolutely not. I was just really busy two weeks ago, and to be quite honest, just forgot this week, (Sorry about that)!

So, because I love you all so much, and I guess you guys actually do like Make-Up Tip Mondays, I am giving you a middle of the week makeup Make-Up Tip... Two Tips actually... Just because I feel so bad for neglecting it.

So, to start things off, if you are like me, when you go to the make up counter, or the drug store, (where ever you find your face fancies) you can feel a little overloaded with all the possibilities of things to try and things to add to the growing collection in your make up case.

One of the BIGGEST things that overwhelms me, is BLUSH. Oh man! Just thinking about all the different colors and all the different options: Cream, liquid, powder, mineral, shimmer, matte... the list goes on and on. Can I let you in on a little secret? My personal preference in MOST situations is simply this: Bright pink, in a matte powder.

Some people look at me like I'm crazy when I say this, but I have yet to find a single woman out there who doesn't look phenomenal in a bright pink, matte powder blush. Trust me, a little goes a VERY long way, so it's nice to your wallet too.

The best color I have ever EVER found is Lancome's Cosmopolitan Pink... but sadly, I'm not entirely sure they still carry that color. It looked good on EVERYONE. I'm talking, pale girls, dark skinned girls, latina girls, asian girls. You name it, I tried it on them, and they loved it. 8 times out of 10, they bought it too.

Now, it depends on the look you are going for, but I would say that for everyday looks it is the best.

If you want to look sunkissed, an all over powder bronzer is awesome, and then a peach colored cream blush on the apples of your cheeks. If you don't know where the apples of your cheeks are, look in the mirror and smile, and you'll know exactly where to put it. (One thing... a lot of people do the fish face when putting on their blush, it's honestly not necessary, and I think smiling is much easier personally. Also, just a side note, I personally believe that the more you smile while putting on your make up, the prettier you feel, and the more self confidence you gain... just my own opinion... Try it! I promise you'll be a convert! Don't we all as women need a little more self confidence? Can you just imagine a world where women felt GOOD about themselves? Now, smile, and tell your friends to do it too!).

Oh, and about the bronzer, I'll address that as we get a little closer to summer time.

To apply powder blush, I think the BEST brushes are flat head brushes, but they seem to be in short supply these days. Here is an example of a brush that will do:

What I do is this, I get a little bit on the side, and then put it on in circles, starting in the front and moving to the back. Start with a little, and add as you go. It's ALWAYS EASIER TO ADD THAN IT IS TO TAKE OFF.

*****UPDATE ON THE BRUSH SITUATION!!***** I just went to Target today and SONIA KASHUK makes a flat head blush brush... It's brush number 4.

It's synthetic, so not as nice as mink, but the price tag is much nicer... $14.99!!! Awesome, or what? Ready for more good news? You can apply cream blush with it. Nice, huh? Okay, back to the Make up tips... :)

If you are using a cream blush, use the pads of your middle and ring fingers (they have a lighter touch) and getting just a small amount, dab it on your cheeks. Once it's on, then go back over with clean fingers and blend it in. Again, try to stick to the cheekbone area. (Though, if you have a rounder face, you can apply blush just below the cheekbones for a slimming effect... not too much though!)

Okay, now on to the next topic... LIPS.

I like lip liner. Not everyone does. I tend to use a lip liner that is very VERY natural, but just a shade darker than my own lip color. I use pencil almost exclusively (the one's you sharpen). No real reason there... just usually personal preference.

I start with the top lip, right in the cupids bow, by making a little V.
Then I take the pencil and put it at a 45 degree angle so that I get a slightly thicker line that blends better.
I use small strokes and just go right along the lip line. Because I have a thinner upper lip, I make a thicker line with the liner along the outer corners of my upper lip. If you divide your upper lip in to three segments, only the middle third doesn't have the thicker line... does that make sense?
Then, on the bottom lip, I line it along the natural lip line as well, and if you have a thinner lower lip, you can do the same trick I just mentioned above on the lower lip. This creates dimension, and causes an effect that "plumps" your lips.
Because I'm a bit of a natural girl when it comes to lips, (again, personal preference) this is the point where I whip out the lip gloss.
If you like to use lipstick, try applying it with a brush. It's always nice to change things up. :) If you use lipstick, just go along the line you just created, and fill your lips in. I like to use a brush because there is typically less feathering and clean up after I apply it.

Now, on to the lipgloss. Yes, I ALWAYS use lip gloss on top of my lipstick because it adds dimension. I'm all about dimension when it comes to lips. That's how I make them stand out without using super bold colors.

You can use this trick for plain lips or lipsticked lips. Here goes:

Put the lip gloss on the pad of your middle finger, or your ring finger. Put enough on there so that you can dab it on.
Now, take your finger, and try to stick to just the middle third (remember what I said above) of your top and bottom lips. If you get too much toward the outer corners it can sometimes end up where you don't want it and make you look like a sticky mess.

Now, sticking to the middle third of the top and bottom lips, dab it... don't smear it... on. Don't rub it in, just dab it on... this is why you need to play with the amount you put on your finger beforehand, because too much will make a mess, and too little will be just that... too little.

For a fuller lip, dab the lip gloss just outside the lip line you made with the liner... not too far outside it, but it will create a fuller look to your lips.

I don't know if you have noticed when you pick out lipsticks or glosses in the store before trying them on, but I know for me, my skin changes the color of lipsticks and glosses. Mine turns EVERYTHING really pink. So, I tend to use lipsticks that have a blue undertone, (for example RED lipsticks are amazing, but I go for red lipsticks that have blue undertones, or COOL undertones versus REDS that have WARM undertones or yellow undertones) and I like glosses that have a warmer undertone... I use a lot of peachy glosses with shimmer... (I'm going to get sidetracked for a minute and explain this... my personal choice is cream lipsticks and shimmery glosses... just my opinion... but try it and see if you like it-I know a lot of women can NOT be talked out of their metallic and shimmery lipsticks... just TRY it-Make up is removable!).

Anyway, the reason I go with cool undertoned lipsticks and warm undertoned glosses is because they kind of cancel each other out and I am left with a more neutral, flattering outcome once it's all applied.

Well, I know I was long winded on this one, but I am going to see about possibly adding pictures or video tutorials in future Make-up tip Mondays... I have to figure it out though... Until then, if you have any questions, just leave a comment and let me know!

I hope this was helpful.

Suz

Easter 2010

Well, since this weekend was devoted to something else, we have decided to do our Easter next weekend. This goes against everything I hold dear... I like to celebrate things on the ACTUAL day, it just doesn't feel the same to me if it's not.

Anyway, since we had to be in Vegas for a... I don't really know what to call it. I guess a celebration of marriage? Regardless, we were able to look all snazzy for Easter weekend, in between working our arses off to help pull this thing off... So, here are a few sweat free moments for your visual enjoyment.

Please forgive the date stamp. My mother in law took the pictures with her camera. I'm just grateful we got a few nice pictures for Easter weekend. What do you think of the photoshopped ones? I love Photoshop!

Hope your Easter was as pretty as ours, but not as crazy!

With Love,
Suz
